periments were therefore conducted. Various methods have already been reported for thin layer chromatography of antioxidants by Seher (1), Meyer (2), Davidek and Pokorny (3) and Jonas (4). Seher utilized a two-dimension chromatography with silica gel as the adsorbent and chloroform and benzene as the solvents for development. Gallates and related compounds and NDGA remained at the starting point and could not be separated by this method. Meyer used a silicagel-kieselguhr mixture as the adsorbent and a mixture of hexane and glacial acetic acid as the developing solvent. Davidek and Pokorny used polyamide powder and methanol-acetone-water mixture. Jonas utilized silica gel impregnated with 10% paraffin in petroleum ether as the adsorbent and 75% methanol as the developing solvent and succeeded in separating gallates and NDGA. We have used a polyamide powder plate and chloroform-methanol as the developing solvent in two dimension chromatography to separate 7 antioxidants, NDGA, BHA, BHT, JAG, PrG, ƒ¿-tocopherol and Santoquin from vitamin A oils and vegetable oils and compared the results with those obtained by using a silicagel G plate.
